Nashville and Davidson County



Nashville and Davidson County came under one government with a Metropolitan Charter, effective April 1, 1963.  It is governed by a Mayor, Vice Mayor and a council of 40 members.  There are two tax rates.  One applies to the entire county, called the General services District, with an additional levy in the Urban Services District, which receives additional services.

Licenses and Registrations

Drivers License
New residents to Tennessee have 30 days from the time they establish permanent residency to change their out-of-state driver’s license to a valid Tennessee license. To apply for a Tennessee license, you must pass a vision test and have a valid license from another state.  For first-time license, you must have a certified birth certificate,  pass a written law test, and a road test.


Automobile Registration
New residents to Nashville must change their out-of-state vehicle registration at the time their residency has been declared.  To help control pollution, the vehicle must pass an emissions test prior to registering your vehicle.  To register your vehicle, you must bring proof of registration or the title or the name/address of lien holder to the County Clerk’s office.

Voter Registration
To register to vote in the State of Tennessee, you must be 18 years of age and register as a resident of the state 30 days prior to the election and provide a street address and a social security number.  Forms are available at any public library or post office.

Pet Laws
All dogs in Davidson County must be licensed and seen by a veterinarian for yearly rabies shots and tags.

Hunting and Fishing License
All persons EXCEPT those listed below are required to purchase a license to fish and/or hunt.

Fishing:  Youngster under the age of 16
Hunting: Youngsters under age 16 must purchase a JUNIOR HUNTING LICENSE.

Persons over age 65 are not required to purchase a license but need to carry proof of date of birth.
