Accident Reports
Accidents that are not injury related and/or occur on private property should be reported to the Brentwood Police Department at
371-0160. If an accident occurs on public property or is injury related, dial 911. See Police Reports.
Administrative Offices
Located at 5211 Maryland Way, hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 371-0060.
Adopt-A-Mile
Clubs, organizations, businesses and families adopt-a-mile and pick up litter three times a year. If you are interested in this program,
contact the Community Relations Director at 371-0060.
Alarms (Business & Residential)
When installing an alarm system, an Emergency Contact Form (available from the Police Department) should be completed.
False alarms, in excess of three in a twelve month period, may result in a $25 fine per alarm.
Ambulance Service
In an emergency situation call 911. For non-emergency call 371-2800.
Animal Control
The Williamson County Animal Shelter is located at 138 Claude Yates Drive in Franklin. Call 790-5590 for further information.

Blasting Permit
Blasting permits must be obtained from both the Brentwood Fire Department and the State of Tennessee. Blasting regulations and
standards are dictated under state law and monitoring the regulations are enacted by the state. For complaints or suggestions
call the State Department of Commerce & Insurance at 741-7048.
Board of Zoning Appeals
A five member citizen board is responsible for home occupation permits and accessory buildings and reviews all appeals and
variances to the Zoning Code. Board meets on third Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Municipal Center.

Boards and Commissions
Citizens are encouraged to apply for appointments to any of the City’s volunteer boards and commissions. The Boards are: Planning
Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Park Board, Library Board, Board of Building Construction Appeal, Brentwood Tree
Committee, and Brentwood Historic Commission. A list of available positions and application forms may be obtained by contacting
the Community Relations Director at 371-0060.
Brentwood Activity Books
A coloring and activity book designed for children to explain Brentwood’s city government. The activity books are available to
individuals and groups. For copies call Community Relations Director, 371-0060.
Brush Removal
Brush removal is available to City of Brentwood residents on a monthly basis. Brush placed at the curb is chipped by Public Works
crews on scheduled routes. Brush or trees cut by a commercial tree service will not be accepted. Commercial services must haul the
trimmings away. Call the Public Works Department at 371-0080 for information on when the brush chipping crew will be in your
neighborhood or check the city's website, www.brentwood-tn.org.
Building Permits
Required for any new structures, room additions, renovations, decks, swimming pools, commercial tents, sheds, signs (permanent
or temporary) and demolition of structures. Contact the Codes Department at 371-2204.
Burning Trash, Limbs and Leaves
City of Brentwood prohibits, by ordinance, any burning of materials within the City limits. For more information, call the Fire
Department at 371-0170.
Business License
A business license is required to operate a commercial business or home occupation. Contact the Business Tax Clerk at 371-0060 for
further information. See Home Occupation.

Cable Channel 19
Brentwood’s government access channel is designed to provide concise, up to date information about various city government services,
meetings, programs, and upcoming events.

City Building Closings
The City offices and library are closed on the following holidays: NewYear’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. When any
holiday occurs on a Sunday, offices will be closed on Monday; and when the holiday occurs on a Saturday, offices will be closed
on Friday.
City Commission Meeting
Meetings are normally held the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Municipal Center’s Commission Chambers,
located at 5211 Maryland Way. Agendas for upcoming meetings are available at the Municipal Center, on city's web site, and are also published as legal notices in a local newspaper. Citizens wishing to address the City Commission
may do so during the "Citizens’ Comment" portion of the agenda. A sign-in sheet is provided for those wishing to make comments.
The City Commission meeting is rebroadcast on Comcast Cable Channel 19 on Tuesday and Thursday (9:00 a.m. & 7:00 p.m.)
following the meeting and webcast at www.brentwood-tn.org. Call 371-0060 for further information.
City Commissioners
The City Commission is the legislative and policy-making body of the City. It consists of seven members elected at-large for four year,
staggered terms. The Mayor and Vice Mayor are appointed by the City Commission for two year terms.
City Court
City Court generally deals with traffic cases and violations of city ordinances. Court is held eight times a month at 8:00 a.m. and
4:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at the Municipal Center, 5211 Maryland Way. To confirm a court date, call 371-2272,

City Manager
The City of Brentwood operates under a commission-manager form of government. The City Manager is hired by the Board of
Commissioners and is the Chief Executive Officer with responsibility for the day-to-day operations of city government, as well as
implementing the policies enacted by the City Commission. The City Manager’s office is located at the Municipal Center, 5211
Maryland Way, 371-0060.

Community Relations Department
This department provides information on city activities, coordinates special events and helps citizens who are unable to determine
the appropriate department to contact to resolve a problem. Responsibilities include public information - City Newsletter, Government
Channel 19, City Web Page, New Resident’s Packet and Community Guide; community volunteer boards; city sponsored events -
July 4th, Park Concert Series & Arbor Day; overseeing the Cool Springs House and historic log house in Crockett Park; the
Historic Boiling Spring Academy on Moores Lane and coordinating volunteer work by citizens. For more information call 371-0060.

Concerts at Amphitheater
The City sponsors a concert series annually at the Eddy Arnold Amphitheater located in Crockett Park. Contact the Community
Relations Director at 371-0060 for a schedule of events or further information. In order for everyone to enjoy the concerts, the Parks
Department has several guides: no rollerblades, skateboards or bikes on the amphitheater grass, no alcohol or smoking permitted, and
please keep dogs, frisbees and balls on the outside edge of the amphitheater.
Cool Springs House
The historic Cool Springs House in Crockett Park, owned and maintained by the city, is available for rent. The first floor is designed
for weddings, receptions and community gatherings, and a portion of the second floor has been transformed into a large conference
room for meetings, seminars, workshops and business retreats. For further information call the Municipal Center at 371-0060.
Crime Prevention
Crime prevention is a major emphasis of the City of Brentwood Police Department. Officers are available to help organize
Neighborhood Watch programs, which encourage neighbors to be alert and report suspicious activities to the police. Contact
the Police Department at 371-2281, extension 345 or 346.
Crime Report (Non-Emergency)
To report a non-emergency crime call the Brentwood Police Department, 371-0160. For emergencies, call 911.
Cross Connection Control Program
This program protects against contamination and pollution to the city’s water supply. If a lawn irrigation system is connected to the
city’s water supply a backflow prevention device is required and inspected annually. For more information contact the Codes Department
at 371-2204.

Dead Animals
To have dead animals removed from streets and the public right-of-way call Public Works Department, 371-0080. See Animal Control.
Decks
A permit is required to build a deck. Unless building and setback issues arise, the permit should be ready the same business day as
submitted. Contact the Codes Department at 371-2204.
Driver’s License
The Tennessee Highway Patrol Office is located at 4248 South Carothers Road, Franklin. For more information about renewals or
applying for a driver’s license call 790-5515. Hours are Tuesday-Friday 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Easements
Most properties have some form of easement specified on the recorded plat. Easements are areas of properties that have special public
uses or or have restrictions on general use by the property owner. There are many forms of easements including but not limited to utility,
drainage, communication and access easements. For questions concerning easements, contact the Public Works Department at 371-0080.
Education
The Williamson County Board of Education is located at the County Administrative Complex, second floor, 1320 West Main Street,
Franklin, 472-4000. For additional information, see Schools.
Electrical Permits
Permits are required for electrical work done to any structure. Permits are issued through the State of Tennessee Electrical Office -
contact the local office at 371-2281 extension 270.

EMS - Emergency Medical Services
The ambulance service in Brentwood is staffed and operated by the Williamson County Hospital, 791-0500. When an ambulance
is required, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics with the Brentwood Fire Department also respond to assist the ambulance
personnel.
Emergency 911
For emergency police, medical, or fire services, dial 911. The phone number and address of the caller will appear on a computer
display screen and emergency personnel will be dispatched immediately. If you are calling from a cellular phone, be sure to give
your exact location.
Employment
Employment applications for the City of Brentwood are available at the Administrative Office, Municipal Center, 5211
Maryland Way. Applications are accepted only for advertised vacancies except for police officers, firefighters, maintenance workers
and library technicians (for which applications are accepted year-round). For more information, visit the website at www.brentwood-tn.org or call the Human Resources Department at 371-0060 during normal business hours.
Engineering Department
The Engineering Department is responsible for reviewing the design of new developments, both commercial and residential, for compliance
with the city’s technical rules and regulations including road and drainage system design, inspecting the development during construction, implementation of the storm water compliance program and addressing concerns and issues that may affect adjoining property.

Fences
The City of Brentwood enforces certain standards for the construction and maintenance of fences and screening walls. The standards
address the materials and types of installations permitted, height/design limitations, and prohibited areas such as public utility and drainage easements, etc. Fences installed in the flood plain must be approved by the Planning Commission. While no permits are required for
installation of standard type fences in residential districts, residents are strongly encouraged to review the requirements established in
Section 78-10 of the Municipal Code. The code is available for your review at the city’s web page www.brentwood-tn.org under the
Legal Department. In addition, residents should confirm that the type and placement of the proposed fence will comply with the restrictive covenants and other regulations in force for the subdivision or development. Call the Planning and Codes Department at 371-2204
for more information.
Finance Department
The Finance Department collects revenues that are authorized under State Statute and City Codes; safeguards financial assets of the City;
prepares annual and long-term financial forecasts and budgets; compiles an annual audited financial report; disburses budgeted financial
resources; and provides prudent investment of idle resources. For further information, contact the Finance Department at 371-0060.
Fire Department
The Fire Department responds to fires and calls for emergency medical assistance from its four fire stations located at 5211 Maryland
Way, 1301 Wilson Pike, 1750 General George Patton Drive and 1300 Sunset Road. For emergencies, call 911 and for non-
emergencies call 371-0170.
Fire Public Safety Programs
The Fire Department offers the following safety programs: Citizens Fire Academy, Fire Safety House, CPR Classes, Fire Extinguisher
Classes, Residential Fire Safety Inspections, Smoke Detector Campaign, Fire Station Tours, Basic First Aid Classes, and
Clown Troupe Presentations. Contact the Fire Department at 371-0170 for more information.
Fireworks
The sale, possession and use of fireworks is prohibited within the City of Brentwood.
Flood Plain
The City of Brentwood participates in the F.E.M.A. (Federal Emergency Management Agency) flood insurance program.
Development is restricted and in some cases prohibited within the designated flood plains of the City. If you need to determine if
property is in the flood plain, call the Planning & Codes Department at 371-2204.

Garage Sales
Garage sales are limited by ordinance to a maximum of two sales per year. Each garage sale shall be limited to two days,
and no permit is required. Signs for garage sales may not be posted in the public right-of-way, including utility poles and light poles.
Ample parking must be provided so as to not cause a traffic disturbance or a parking violation. Questions on the use of signs should
be directed to the Planning & Codes office at 371-2204.

Grading Permit
A grading permit is required for any land disturbance activity that will change the grade of a property or may result in increased soil erosion.
These activities include clearing, stripping, grading, excavating, transporting or filling. Home gardens, home landscaping or lawn preparation
is exempt unless there is potential to create erosion or to change drainage patterns. For additional information, contact the Engineering

Handbill Distribution
Handbills, which include leaflets, circulars and pamphlets, etc., may only be distributed by transmitting the material directly to the owner,
occupant or other person present in or upon the property. This provision does not apply to the U.S. Postal Service or newspapers.
Health Department
The Williamson County Health Department is located at 1324 West Main Street, Franklin. For information on services, call 794-1542.
Historic Commission
The Brentwood Historic Commission’s purpose is to promote the preservation of Brentwood’s historic sites and heritage. This is
accomplished by recognizing and preserving the historic sites in Brentwood and providing educational programs, activities and events
relating to the heritage of Brentwood. The Brentwood Historical Society, sponsored by the Historic Commission, is a volunteer
organization open to all citizens. It is also dedicated to the study and preservation of Brentwood's history and culture. For more

Home Occupation
Home occupations must be approved by the Brentwood Board of Zoning Appeals for certain occupations or the Planning and Codes
Department. Certain types of business occupations are prohibited. Applications should be submitted to the Planning and Codes
Department at 5211 Maryland Way. A pamphlet on "Home Occupations" may also be obtained at the Municipal Center. Contact

Keep Williamson Beautiful
A program to educate the residents of Williamson County to take responsible action in environmental enhancement through
litter prevention, beautification, solid waste management and community improvements. For more information call 790-5848.

Landfill
Williamson County landfill is located at 5750 Pinewood Road, Franklin. The county also operates convenience center for the disposal
of certain materials and refuse. For more information, call 790-0742.
Lawncare
In an attempt to protect the health, safety and welfare of nearby residents, the city requires property owners to keep all weeds and
grass mowed. If vegetation exceeds twelve (12) inches high and the owner fails to cut after notification, the city will have the property
mowed and the property owner will be charged. If you believe someone may be in violation of this ordinance, please call 371-2204.
Leash Law
City ordinance requires dogs and cats to be kept on a leash whenever they are not on the owner’s property. Complaints about
roaming animals should be directed to the Williamson County Animal Control at 790-5590.
Library
The Brentwood Library, operated by the City of Brentwood, is located at 8109 Concord Road between Lipscomb Elementary and the
YMCA. The telephone number is 371-0090. Hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The library catalog, patron account records
and other information is available on the web at
http://brentwood-tn.org/library. The Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization
open to all citizens. It is dedicated to the advancement of our community through its library. The principal activities revolve around
quarterly used-book sales; the proceeds benefit many library projects.
Library Board
The Brentwood Library Board is a seven-member citizen board appointed by the City Commission. Meetings are held on the second
Wednesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. in the Brentwood Library. Call 371-0090 for more information.
Library Foundation
Brentwood Library Foundation is a nonprofit organization chartered in 2002 to solicit and obtain contributions in support of the
library. The foundation seeks to fund projects identified by the library's Board of Trustees as worthy enhancements of the
reading rooms, collections and programs.
Litter
Litter is removed along roadways and in the public right-of-way by the Public Works Department as time permits. The City also
sponsors an "Adopt-A-Mile" program where various groups take responsibility for litter pickup three times a year. If you are interested
in adopting a mile, contact the Community Relations Director at 371-0060.

These packets are given to new Brentwood residents. The packet contains material that informs residents about their new home

Newsletter
The City publishes and delivers a semi-annual newsletter in April and October, entitled Citizen’s Update, to all Brentwood residents.

Open Space in OSRD
The open space in OSRD (Open Space Residential Development) is intended to preserve permanent open space with subdivision,
such as steep hillsides, historic resources, floodplain areas, nature preserves and buffer strips along major roads. In newer
subdivision, scenic easements are provided within these open spaces to protect trees from removal without city or homeowners'
association permission.
Outdoor Warning System
Due to turbulent weather Middle Tennessee has experienced during the past several years, the city has installed a new Tornado Warning
System. When the sirens are activated, residents should seek shelter immediately and turn to a local television channel. The warning
devices in the parks also have lightening detection devices that play verbal messages warning of possible lightening strikes. Additional

the month at 1:00 p.m.
Ordinance
An ordinance is a formal enactment of a local law as adopted by the City Commission. Adoption of zoning changes, annexation of
property and the city’s annual budget also require passage of an ordinance. Ordinances must be passed on two readings before taking effect.

Brentwood has nine parks and eight greenway/green spaces, covering over 575 acres of recreational land. They provide athletic fields,
basketball and tennis courts, picnic shelter areas, biking/walking and hiking trails, playgrounds, an outdoor amphitheater and a
historic area. Athletic fields, courts and picnic shelters are open for reservation. Fee and deposit are required. Pets must be on a leash
at all times. Event permits are required to conduct any event or activity in the city parks. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department

Park Board
A volunteer citizen board that meets on the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Center to discuss park projects

Planning Commission
The Brentwood Planning Commission, a board consisting of nine appointed citizens and a city commissioner, oversees subdivision
and site plan development related to housing, zoning, expansion, landscaping/screening and open space. The board meets the first
Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Brentwood Municipal Center. The Planning Commission meeting is shown on Comcast
Cable Channel 19 on Tuesdays and Thursdays (9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.) following the meeting. Call 371-2204 for further information.
Planning and Codes Department
The Planning and Codes Department is responsible for assisting citizens in determining the zoning of property, flood plain determinations,
address verification, home occupation permits, accessory structures permits, and other miscellaneous development issues. The Codes
staff assists citizens in obtaining information about building a home or an addition, permit requirements, home repairs, construction of
swimming pools and decks, complaints or inquiries about adjacent properties and other building code related issues. For more

Supported by an enhanced 911 communications system, the Brentwood Police Department protects the city and responds to traffic

Resident Responsibility
Residents of the City of Brentwood are asked to observe all regulations regarding their property, which include cleaning and maintaining
sidewalks adjoining their property, as well as driveways, approaches and curbs; keeping property clear of junk vehicles and litter;
maintaining a lawn free of excessively high grass and/or weeds and assuring that all easements are clear of obstructions.
Resolution
City Commission actions not requiring passage of an ordinance are generally accomplished by resolution. Resolutions may be passed to
recognize a noteworthy accomplishment or event, state intentions of Commissioners, request action from other legislative bodies,
approve contracts or authorize acquisition of property for city projects.
Right-of-Way Questions
The right-of-way is a strip of land owned by the city, state or federal government typically adjacent to and including the street which is
used for the roadway and essential utilities. There are limitations on what a property owner may do within the right-of-way. For further

Road Construction, Resurfacing Program
Road construction occurs mainly during the spring and summer months, as existing roads are upgraded and new ones are constructed.

Utility and drainage easements are located along most residential lot lines (as shown on final subdivision plat) and anywhere else a utility

Vehicle
Disabled Motor Vehicle - It is unlawful for the occupant or owner of any property in a residentially zoned district to allow
a disabled or inoperative motor vehicle to be stored on the property unless the vehicle is in a garage or other enclosed building.
Parking of Vehicles - Commercial vehicles with a gross vehicular weight of 8,000 pounds cannot be parked in service
institution zoning districts or residential zoning districts on a public street or on any lot of less than five acres. Excluded from
this provision are emergency service vehicles and other vehicles actively engaged in performing a service.
Parking on Streets - Any truck or motor vehicle of more than 18,000 pounds gross weight, or any trailer or semi-trailer,
whether or not attached to a tractor, may not park on any street from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This does not apply to trucks,
trailer or semi-trailers parked while actually engaged in performing a service.

Brentwood water rates. Current water rates multiplied by the percentages shown below will be applied to the four month
